Meet Our Providers

James A. Cunningham, MD

James A. Cunningham, MD

James A. Cunningham. MD joined Carson Urologists in 1995, and has been serving Northern Nevada for over twenty years. He was initially certified by the American Board of Urology in 1997, and has maintained active board certification, having most recently recertified in 2014.

Dr. Cunningham received his medical degree from Indiana University of Medicine in Indianapolis in 1989, graduating with honors (a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society). He completed a six year residency at University of Southern California Medical Center in 1995. His training included two years of general surgery followed by four years of urologic surgery.

Dr. Cunningham is involved in advancing the field of urology including multiple publications in urologic journals, and presenting papers at professional urological assemblies. He practices general urology with an emphasis on prostate cancer, bladder cancer, prostate enlargement (BPH), incontinence, stone disease and vasectomy.

Roland N. Chen, MD

Roland N. Chen, MD

Dr. Chen joined Carson Urologists in June 2000. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery for the urinary tract and has performed thousands of laparoscopic and percutaneous procedures for kidney disease. His primary interest is in the treatment of kidney cancer and complex kidney stones. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Chen graduated Magna cum laude and Phi beta kappa from Amherst College. He received his medical degree from Temple University where he won the John Huber Anatomy Prize and the Urology Department Prize. He served his Urology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation followed by a Fellowship in endourology and minimally invasive surgery at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins University. He is coauthor of numerous publications in the field of his interest. He is also a reviewer for the Nevada Medical Board.

Dr. Chen has been married to his wife since 1990 and has 3 children. He is an avid skier and enjoys paddle boarding and kayaking on Lake Tahoe.

Randall George Nixon, MD

Randall George Nixon, MD

Dr. Nixon received his medical degree from the University of Washington School Medicine in 1998. He performed his internship in General Surgery, and his residency in Urologic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  He is board certified by the American Board of Urology.

Dr. Nixon has published multiple journal articles on the pro’s and con’s of PSA testing, prostate cancer, and bladder cancer. He has also published work in pediatric urology. He has written review articles and a book chapter on refining the clinical usefulness of PSA testing. 

Dr. Nixon also did volunteer work at a rural clinic in Palacios, Honduras. He was born and raised in Montana. He now practices and is licensed in both Nevada and California, and joined Carson Urologists, Ltd. in 2003.

Michael Sheehan, RNFA, MSN, NPc

Michael Sheehan, RNFA, MSN, NPc, CUNP

Michael joined Carson Urologists, Ltd. as a part of our team in January of 2011 and has been an integral part of providing and improving our quality patient care. Michael graduated with a BSN from William Carey College on the coast of Mississippi in 1999. He went on to earn his RNFA in 2001 and his MSN in 2005. He is a nationally certified family Nurse Practitioner and a nationally certified Urology Nurse Practitioner.

Michael’s philosophy of care is grounded in the nursing model and he treats each patient through the lived experience of their health and aims to care for the whole individual.

There may be times where you will be treated by Michael instead of one of the Urologists – Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Chen, or Dr. Nixon.

Steve Miner, PA-C

Steve Miner, PA-C has been a part of Carson Urologists, Ltd. Since May 2012. He received his PA training and Master’s degree from the MEDEX program at the University of Washington, in 2011. He completed his undergraduate work at BYU in 1997. Steve became a PA following a career as a Fireman/Paramedic in Las Vegas, NV.

Steve is nationally certified by the NCCPA. He is also a member of the American Urological Association, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Nevada Academy of Physician Assistants.

Steve is fluent in Spanish, which is a great asset to our practice. He works with all of our providers and frequently travels to our satellite offices. Steve has lived in Carson City for the past 3 years with his wife and 5 children.

There may be times when you will be treated by Steve instead of one of the Urologists – Dr. Cunningham, Dr. Chen, or Dr. Nixon.
